Year 9 Commerce on the ASX
The students in Year 9 Commerce are playing the ASX game. The Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) have provided a forum for students to learn about investing in the sharemarket. The students are given $50,000 to form syndicates and invest in shares from 3rd March to 11th May, 2011. At Holroyd High School, we have 4 syndicates and are competing in a national schools competition.
The results so far we are placed:
National ranking 2058 out of 16996
State ranking 690 out of 6168
One HHS team has currently (12/4/11) made money on their investment and has a portfolio value of $52,100; the other three teams are losing on their investment at present.
The daily fluctuations on the share market can vary significantly and students are encouraged to watch the market to capitalise on their investments over the game period. The winning school, from Gladstone Park in Victoria, to date has a portfolio value of $59,952. In NSW the winning school, St Patricks College, to date has $57,311.
The educational value for Commerce students is learning about investing in public companies in Australia and gaining an understanding of how being a stakeholder in Australian businesses encourages wealth and business enterprise. Learning about the stockmarket adds value to learning in senior subjects such as Economics and Business Studies.
