Years 7 to 8

Students in Years 7 and 8 are placed into classes according to their literacy performance.

Students in Year 7 are exposed to a wide range of texts across a diverse curriculum. In Term 1, students complete the introductory unit, 'Me, Myself and I', which aims to orientate them to the high school experience. During the course of the year they will examine a non-fiction text, myths and legends and explore visual texts. The main focus for Year 7 is to develop skills in composing and responding to a wide range of texts in the modes of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing.

This year all Year 7 students are completing a reading program based on texts selected for the Premier's Reading Challenge. This aims to develop student appreciation for reading and strengthen student literacy skills.

In Year 8 students complete units on poetry, a close study of a fictional text and a film study which explores the use of animation in the creation of narrative. Drama is also a strong focus in Year 8 with students doing two drama lessons a fortnight. These lessons focus on movement, concentration and focus, play and script creation and development, teamwork and individual performance.

Students in the top classes are expected to sit for the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) English examination in August. Other interested students may also sit for this examination.

The English faculty also runs a Stage 4 debating team and a public speaking competition and all interested students can register for the current team with Miss Marquez.
